US Open 2021 LIVE- Defending champion Naomi Osaka Ousted, as Annie Fernandez claims memorable comeback win -Defending champion Naomi Osaka’s bid for a 5th Grand Slam title was brought to a cruel end as she was handed a defeat in round three by Canada’s Leylah Annie Fernandez. Osaka had clinched the first set on Saturday, but her Canadian opponent kept pushing her, eventually breaking late in the second set to seal the tie-breaker and force a third set decider. The former World No.1 looked a shadow of her former self as Fernandez pushed her to the brink, before clinching a monumental 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 win.

After both players held their serves through the first 10 games, the four-time Grand Slam winner broke Fernandez’s serve and then closed out the set in the next game with an ace to cheers from the New York crowd. However, the game soon turned on its head with Fernandez stepping on the gas and piling the pressure on the third seed, which saw her lose cool in the tiebreaker of the second set. The 18-year-old clinched the second essay, before Fernandez dominated the third set, as Osaka to create a single break point opportunity.

“I tell people that I’m a perfectionist. I think for me something that’s less than perfection, even though it might be something great, is a disappointment. I don’t really think that’s a healthy way of thinking,” Osaka told US Open after beating Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic in the first round.

“In this tournament I just want to be happy with, like, knowing that I did my best and knowing that even though I didn’t play perfect I was able to win a match in two sets, or if I have to battle, play a match in three sets, know that I made a couple mistakes, but it’s okay at the end of the day because I’ll learn from the matches that I’ll keep playing,” she added.
