US Open 2021: Sania Mirza-Christina McHale pair ends runners-up ahead of US Open: Veteran Indian tennis player Sania Mirza and her American partner Christina McHale ended runners-up at the WTA 250 event here after losing the title clash to top seeds Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara. Mirza and McHale lost the final 5-7 3-6 to the Japanese pair in one hour and 24 minutes.
The Indo-American pair suffered a straight-sets hammering by 7-5, 6-3 in the title match of the WTA 250 tournament on Saturday night (local time) that lasted for just under an hour and 30 minutes. Mirza and her partner from the USA gave the Japanese duo a very tough battle in the opening set of the match. A break in the seventh game pegged them back, Sania Mirza and Christina McHale restored parity in the very next game. But the duo once again fell short in the 11th game as another break handed Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara the opening set.
US Open 2021: With an early break in the second set, the top-seed Japanese duo provided no respite to their opponents and stormed towards the title rather easily.
Sania Mirza will next head to New York for the US Open as the Indian tennis ace has been handed a wildcard entry into the women’s doubles of the season’s final Grand Slam.
US Open 2021: Earlier, Sania Mirza entered her first WTA 250 event final after returning from a maternity break. The Indo-American pair defeated Ulrikke Eikeri and Catherine Harrison in straight sets by 7-6 (5) 6-2 in the semifinals of the WTA 250 tournament on Friday night (local time). Mirza and her partner from the USA never gave the duo of Norwegian-American any chance to settle in the match as they captured the first set very easily. The second set was no different as they provided no respite to their opponents and stormed into the final.
Back in the Tokyo Olympics, Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina pair had to suffer a first-round exit, losing to Lyudmyla Kichenok and Nadiia Kichenok pair.
