US Open 2021 semifinals LIVE- men’s singles: World No. 1 Novak Djokovic beats Zverev, to face Daniil Medvedev in US Open Final

The US Open 2021 Final will see the top two ranked players in the men’s rankings collide as Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev will lock horns at the Flushing Meadows. Medvedev booked his place in the summit clash for the second time in three years, as he breezed past Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. Djokovic, meanwhile had a much tougher draw, having won a five-set thriller against Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Alexander Zverev. The duo had faced off in the Australian Open Final earlier this year, with the Djokovic triumphing in straight sets in Melbourne.

Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev is in the U.S. Open final for the second time in three years after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. Twice a point from losing the second set, the No. 2 seed from Russia won 10 of the final 12 games.

Medvedev, who lost to Rafael Nadal in the 2019 final, will play either No. 1 Novak Djokovic or No. 4 Alexander Zverev on Sunday in a bid for his first major title. Djokovic is trying to become the first man to win all four Grand Slam tournaments since Rod Laver — who was in the crowd for Medvedev’s victory — in 1969.

Auger-Aliassime, the No. 12 seed, was the first Canadian man to reach the U.S. Open semifinals. He was trying to join Leylah Fernandez and give his country a player in both the men’s and women’s final.

Alexander Zverev vs Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic channelled his nerves of steel as the World No.1 clinched an epic five-set win over Alexander Zverev in the US Open semi-final. Djokovic clinched the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to make it to his ninth US Open Final, to set up a clash against Daniil Medvedev. The Serbian ace remains on course to achieve a historic Career Slam, having won all three Grand Slams this year.

Alexander Zverev started off well sealing the first set in style, but it was Djokovic who stepped up to take the next two sets and put a stronghold on the match. However, the German again proved to be a thorn in the flesh and took the fourth set, forcing a decider, which Djokovic cruised through, showcasing his pedigree and class. The World No.1 also exacted revenge on Zverev, who had famously knocked him out of gold medal contention in the Tokyo Olympics.

Should he win, it will be his 21st Grand Slam title, the most by a men’s singles player, ahead of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who are both tied at 20 each. The final against Daniil Medvedev will be his ninth at the Flushing Meadows and his 31st overall, tying Roger Federer’s record for the most number of Grand Slam final appearances.
