Emma Raducanu vs Maria Sakkari

British teen sensation Emma Raducanu will face off Maria Sakkari in the semifinals of US Open 2021 on Friday. Sakkari entered the semifinals of the US Open by a stunning performance against 4th seed Karolina Pliskova. She had earlier defeated the likes of other top seeds Petra Kvitova and Binaca Andreescu in her dramatic run at US Open 2021. The 26-year-old is playing in her second semifinals of the Grand Slams after she impressed at the Roland Garros earlier this year. She will be looking to break her jinx by lifting the silverware.

On the other hand, British teen prodigy Emma Raducanu has been phenomenal since her debut as US Open 2021. She proved that the excellent record at Wimbledon was not a one-time affair. She is yet to lose a set in all her matches, including US Open Qualifiers. She made the lightwork of 11th seed Belinda Bencic in the Quarterfinals. As per WTA, Raducanu is the only fourth women’s qualifier to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam event in the Open Era (since 1968). She is now only one win away from becoming the first qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final, it added.

Leylah Fernandez vs Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka suffered further semi-final heartbreak as the No.2 seed was defeated in what was an action-packed contest against Leylah Fernandez. The 19-year-old Canadian made it to her first-ever Grand Slam final as she sealed a thrilling 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win. The win was the World No.73’s biggest win of her career, and added on to her impressive list of upsets at the US Open 2021, having defeated the likes of Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka to reach the final.

Fernandez suffered an early scare when Sabalenka pulled off a break, but the Canadian showed maturity beyond her age to bounce back and take the game to the tie-breaker. She then showcased her ruthless streak to eventually clinch the first set, piling pressure on the world No.2 seed. To her credit, Sabalenka bounced back and clinched the second set, to force a decider for a place in the US Open finals.

Leylah raced 4-2 ahead with another break but risked undoing all her hard work after allowing Sabalenka to restore parity at 4-4. However, the 19-year-old then held her serve, before sealing the final break to ensure her place in history and the US Open 2021 final.
