Pooja Dhanda will be playing for pride and national glory as she would be aiming for nothing less than a podium finish in the women’s 59kg competition as the UWW World Wrestling Championship in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
She is well aware the medal or success will only earn pride and consolation. This weight category has nothing much offer even when the other wresters will be vying for an Olympic quota.
This is the weight category which no women wrestler wants to participate. Reason, 59Kg weight category is not the category which will be seen at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Most of the champion wrestlers like Japan’s two-time world and Olympic champion Risako KAWAI holds the world’s top-ranking at 59kg, but since winning her Budapest world title, she’s dropped down to the Olympic weight of 57kg.
But ironically India’s Pooja Dhanda, the 2018 world championship bronze medallist at 57kg has to do reverse. As Pooja lost out in the trials for 57Kg to compatriot Sarita Mor, WFI decided to field her in 59kg weight category.
