Virat Kohli can be seen batting for Indian Premier League title sponsor Vivo as the company’s brand ambassador.
The BBK Electronics’ owned Chinese smartphone company, according to market sources privy to the development, is engaged in negotiations to sign Kohli as the brand’s India ambassador. The IPL title sponsor, third-largest selling smartphone brand in India, is also aiming to launch a massive campaign with Kohli during the IPL.
InsideSport.co had written to Kohli’s brand managers for a confirmation. They did not respond.
Vivo in the past one year has bridged a big gap with India’s second largest-selling mobile phone brand Samsung. The market share difference between the two brands has narrowed down from 13% in the third quarter of 2018 to 3% for the corresponding period this year. Vivo is learning is aiming to ride the might of India’s biggest brand icon in its strategy to edge past the Korean rival.
If all goes well, Vivo will own up India’s three leading sports brands – the Indian Premier League, the Pro Kabaddi League, and the leading brand icon Virat Kohli.
Kohli in the past had endorsed smartphone brand Gionee, but the deal had ended abruptly as the company was trapped in a financial mess.
Vivo had singed Hindi cinema superstar Aamir Khan ahead of the IPL 2018 season in place of the rising film actor Ranveer Singh. InsideSport.co was then the first publication to write that Vivo will be abruptly ending Ranveer’s deal to get Mr. Perfectionist as the face of the brand.
Kohli is the highest paid brand icon in India and the cricket world. He was also the only Indian and cricketer in Forbes’ highest-paid athlete’s list for 2019.
Interestingly, none of the mobile phone category product features in more than 25 brands Team India skipper is endorsing at present.
