WI vs AUS ODI – Aaron Finch injured, who will captain Australia in ODI’s? As Australian captain Aaron Finch is all but ruled out of the ODI series against West Indies, the Kangaroos have already started asking who will lead the team in his absence? The problem is the team is without its top players including vice-captain Pat Cummins and Matthew Wade has come up as an option for the three matches.

WI vs AUS ODI: Aaron Finch suffers injury setback; Who will be Australia’s captain in ODI series? Will Alex Carey be given responsibility to captain Australia?

WI vs AUS ODI – Aaron Finch injured, who will captain Australia in ODI’s? The Australian captain suffered a knee injury and was visibly struggling in the recently concluded 5th T20 at Saint Lucia. While Finch could recover and play the ODIs, some major decisions will have to be taken should the 34-year-old give any game a miss.

  • Justin Langer and the team management have a huge decision to make should captain Aaron Finch miss out on the ODI series against the West Indies.
  • With vice-captain Pat Cummins and other senior players such as Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith and David Warner not part of the team, Australia will have to look for a new face to appoint as their skipper.
  • Previously, wicket-keeper Alex Carey was the “co-vice captain” alongside Cummins, but he was stripped of the title in 2020. Nonetheless, Alex Carey was named Finch’s deputy against India in December and could take the mantle against the West Indies.

WI vs AUS ODI – Aaron Finch injured, who will captain Australia in ODI’s? A case can also be made for Matthew Wade, who was Finch’s deputy in the five-match T20I series. However, the wicket-keeper admitted that he was not sure whether that title would also see him considered Finch’s deputy for the 50-over games. Speaking to cricket.com.au, Wade said, “It’s a bit of a moving thing, the vice-captaincy.”

WI vs AUS ODI: “Going forward in the one-dayers I have no idea what will happen there. I am probably not expecting to play, especially if Finchy plays, but if he doesn’t there might be an opportunity for me to play. I came over here thinking I would play the T20s and I wouldn’t play the ODIs. I think some of the younger guys would get some opportunities to play them which is fair enough, I’ve been around a long time now. But if Finchy doesn’t come up there might be an opportunity to play, so we’ll wait and see,” said Wade.

Matthew Wade last played an ODI for Australia in 2017 but deputised for Finch in a T20I last summer. He however added that he would “jump at the opportunity” and said that it was pretty easy considering the leaders present in the squad. Moises Henriques, who is a seasoned campaigner and an experienced skipper at the domestic level, captained one of the teams in the intra-squad games and could take up the mantle if necessary.
