Wimbledon 2021: 5 big matches to watch out for in men’s singles opening round

Andy Murray vs Nikoloz Basilashvili

Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will be up against No.24 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in the opening round of the Wimbledon 2021. The latter has performed well in 2021 which included a title win in Munich last month. He also reached the semifinals in Halle 2021. His best in Wimbledon came in 2015 when he reached the third round.

Murray, on the other hand, will be playing at Wimbledon for the first time since 2017. He has dealt with multiple hip surgeries over the last few years. The Brit could only feature in tour-level matches so far this season. Murray has an impressive 85 per cent win record at All England Club (57-10). He has reached the quarterfinals of his last 10 appearances in Wimbledon.

Wimbledon 2021: Novak Djokovic vs Jack Draper

Defending champion Novak Djokovic will begin his quest for record 20th and straight third grand slam against little-known Jack Draper of Britain. The 19-year-old will be making his Grand Slam debut in Wimbledon. He needs to play out of his skin if he has to give any fight to the Serbian legend. Djokovic is the hot favourite to win the match in straight sets but he often struggles to win games easily in his initial matches.

Wimbledon 2021: Mannarino vs Federer

Tennis legend and runner-up Roger Federer will play against Adrian Mannarino in the first round of Wimbledon 2021. Mannarino is coming on the back of a good form in the grass-court tennis event Mallorca Open. He has earlier made it to round 4 of the Wimbledon thrice. Owing to the ongoing form of Swiss legend Federer, the French can come out on top. Federer, meanwhile, is eyeing a record 21st Grand Slam. He is currently level with Rafael Nadal with 20 Grand Slams each.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Frances Taifoe

Third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will face off World No.56 Frances Taiafoe in the opener of Wimbledon 2021. The latter could prove tricky as he reached the quarterfinal at Queen’s club and title run at Nottingham challenger. The duo will be meeting each other for the first time in the main draw. Tsitsipas has made it to the semifinals or better in his last three appearances at grand slams. Tiafoe, on the other hand, had reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2019.

Nick Kyrgios vs Ugo Humbert

Aussie Nick Kyrgios has played only six matches in 2021 which includes a 5 set thriller against Ugo Humbert in round 2 of the Australian Open. Kyrgios, whose rankings dipped to 61 due to inactivity, had skipped the French Open 2021 and ATP tour. He will take on inform Humber who won the grass-court tournament Halle Open last week. The French lefty is expected to show top tennis in Wimbledon 2021 opening round.
