Former world no.1 Venus Williams played her last match in Paris where she lost 6-3 6-1 to Alexandrova in the 1st round.

Former world number one Williams first played Wimbledon in 1997 and is making her 23rd appearance at the tournament.

Now ranked at 111 in the world, she fired 10 aces and 33 winners to defeat her 160th-ranked opponent.

Venus Williams has become the first player to feature in 90 grand slams in the open era.

Buzarnescu put up a good fight, and won the second set to level the match. She denied Williams her first match point before breaking back for 2-5 in the third set. But Williams prevailed under real pressure on her next service game-saving three break points after being denied her second match point – to finally progress to round 2.

Venus Williams will meet Tunisian Ons Jabeur next after the 21st seed defeated Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson 6-2 6-1 in the opening round.
