Vinesh Phogat has got a tough draw as India women will start their campaign in the UWW World Wrestling Championships tomorrow (Tuesday) in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. Among India’s big hopes for a UWW Senior World Championships medal and a Tokyo 2020 Olympics berth, Vinesh faces Sweden’s former world champion Sofia Magdalena Mattsson in the first round.
Sofia also possesses four European Championship golds, but she has not added anything considerable to her closet of medals in the past two years, except for the European Games gold in Minsk earlier this year. Her World Championship gold came in 2009 and her last best was a silver in the 2015 Las Vegas World Championships. Vinesh might still get a tough fight in her World Championship campaign opener.
In other action, Lalita Sehrawat will take on Bolortuya Bat Ochir of Mongolia in the 55 kg category, while in the 72kg competition Komal Bhagwan Gole is pitted against Besle Altug. Lalita had won a silver in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the 53 kg category.
In the 50 kg category, India’s Seema will play the winner of the bout between Nigeria’s Miesinnei Mercy Genesis and Mariya Stadnik of Azerbaijan.
The four weight categories have qualifiers and semi-finals slated for tomorrow. Repchage and finals are slated for Wednesday, when Sarita (62kg), Pooja Dhanda (59 kg), Navjot Kaur (65kg) and Kiran (79 kg) will also take to mat for their first round action. Divya Kakran (68 kg) and Sakshi Malik (62) start their campaign a day later, when men’s freestyle competition will also starts.
