WTC Final LIVE: Muttiah Muralitharan voted ‘Greatest Men’s Test Bowler’ of 21st century – Star Sports commentators and fans on Sunday voted Muttiah Muralitharan as the Men’s Test Bowler of the 21st century.
The Star Sports commentary panel included VVS Laxman, Irfan Pathan, Aakash Chopra among others. In a video released by Star Sports on Twitter, former India captain VVS Laxman said: “My vote would be for Muralidharan. I was privileged to face all these bowlers but no one was like Murali. His sheer presence invoked fear amongst batsmen whether in sub-continent or other countries.”
Muralitharan is regarded as the greatest and most successful bowler in the history of international cricket and the first and only to take 800 wickets in Tests and the highest wicket-taker in both Test & ODI formats and averaging over six wickets per Test match, he has taken more wickets in Test and ODI cricket than any other cricketer.
Muralitharan held the number one spot in the ICC’s player rankings for Test bowlers for a record period of 1,711 days spanning 214 Test matches. He became the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket when he overtook the previous record-holder Shane Warne on 3 December 2007. He retired from Test cricket in 2010, registering his 800th and final wicket on 22 July 2010 from his final ball in his last Test match.
Muralitharan was rated the greatest Test match bowler by Wisden’s Cricketers’ Almanack in 2002, and in 2017 was the first Sri Lankan cricketer to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. He won the Ada Derana Sri Lankan of the Year award in 2017.
