WTC Final LIVE: Rohit Sharma creates new record, becomes first player to feature in two inaugural ICC event finals- India opening batsman Rohit Sharma has become the first player to feature in two inaugural ICC events final. He achieved the feat when he came out to bat against New Zealand in the World Test Championship final at Hampshire Bowl, Southampton. Notably, Rohit Sharma had featured for India in the finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2007.
Rohit had played a crucial knock of 30 runs in the clash against Pakistan. India had gone on to win the Final and win their maiden T20 World Cup. India will hope that Rohit Sharma can emulate a good performance against New Zealand.
It is notable that Rohit Sharma headed into the epic Test after an impressive Test series against England at home where he amassed 345 runs, including a knock of 161 runs.
He scored 34 runs in India’s first innings against Kiwis and shared a 62 runs partnership for the opening wicket with Shubman Gill. He was caught by Tim Southee off Kyle Jamieson.
In the match, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to field first in the much-awaited World Test Championship (WTC) final against India on Saturday. Incessant rain saw the opening day’s play being washed off.
At the toss, India skipper Virat Kohli said, “We would’ve probably bowled first as well. But runs on the board has been our strength. In a big final, runs on the board, however many, are an advantage. As you saw the makeup of our side, the balance is such that we prepare for any conditions. We’ve been performing really well in Test cricket. For us this is just a Test match we have to be professional in, have to follow our processes.”
India: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah.
